Tegra 2, NVIDIA 3
Tegra 2, NVIDIA's SoC, has won the Computex ‘best choice', award for smart handheld devices innovation. This marks the third year in a row that NVIDIA has won this award.
Android tablets are set to have a big presence at this year's Taiwanese tech-fest, with the second generation of Honeycomb devices set to launch and existing tablet OEMs keen to revive interest in their products.
Computex was keen to stress how rigorous and even-handed the judging process was, but its statement on the matter was more than a bit reminiscent of NVIDIA's own marketing line.
"The NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor is truly a super chip," said the jury of the award. "It has ushered in a new wave of super phones and tablet devices with never-before-seen capabilities and experiences. We selected Tegra 2 from hundreds of entries because it's an outstanding technological achievement that's impacted the industry very positively."
Here's what they said on awarding NVIDIA the ‘best choice of overseas enterprise' award in 2009 for ION: "The revolutionary NVIDIA ION graphics processor introduces new capabilities to low-power PCs, including HD video, gaming, and video editing. We selected ION from more than 400 entries because it is an outstanding technological achievement that will have a very positive impact on the industry." The GeForce GTX 480 won an award last year.
There's no doubt Tegra 2 is a break-out product for NVIDIA, but it's a long way from becoming the dominant SoC in mobile devices, despite its head-start in Honeycomb. In tablets alone we have chips from Qualcomm, Apple and Texas Instruments, so NVIDIA won't be allowing this award to make it complacent.
