Phone functions
Of course, the Xperia Play would also be used as a phone as well as a games console and Engadget said it performed much better than Sony Ericsson's X10 handset. It is reportedly fairly snappy and boasts Gingerbread goodies. The Mediascape app has apparently split up into separate widgets including a music player, gallery browser and media shortcuts.
The site commented that the handset can ‘easily' handle 720p video clips and now has a home screen feature that allows all the widgets to fit onto a single screen with one pinch as well as other nifty ways to search through apps. Engadget only saw one new preloaded app- PlayStation Pocket, which it reported seems to be a tool to manage downloaded games.
All in all, it seems that upon first inspection Engadget is reasonably impressed with the handset but its cost as well as the price and availability of games will no doubt determine the demand for the Xperia Play and ultimately its success as a console/phone.
