You can't catch me
With the Android install-base now so large, the release of a new version almost elicits the kind of hype and anticipation of an Apple product launch, almost. The build-up to the release of the next version - codenamed Gingerbread and now set to be Android 2.3 - looks set to culminate this week.
The Android Phone blog spotted a tweet by one Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez, saying: "Preparen sus Nexus One (Developer version) para la actualización vía OTA de Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) para los próximos días :-D", translation (thanks Hugh) "Get your Nexus One (Developer version) ready for an update of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) via over-the-air programming in the next few days."
That's great, but we don't know Senor Vasquez from Adam. Seek and Linked In shall provide, however: a Google search of this name reveals an Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez on Linked In who works for Flypho - as his Twitter profile indicates, but is also a member of the leadership team at the Open Handset Alliance. This is the umbrella body under which the various contributors to Android collaborate. So we must assume this is pretty legit.
In keeping with Google's thinking behind the Nexus One, this will be the first handset to get the OTA update. There were rumours Google was hoping to launch a Nexus Two - derived from the Samsung Galaxy - as the first handset to feature Gingerbread. But TechCrunch's sources reckon the supposed Nexus Two has now been delayed, although some kind of Samsung Android launch is expected today.
