Facebook faceoff

Facebook has unveiled a new look for Android mobile users after months of complaints that the app was not as good as the iPhone version.

The updated version 1.3.0 has a slick new interface boasting two new icons, events and pending requests, which accompany the usual news feed, profile, friends, messages and events icons.

Other new extras include a photo reel allowing users to swipe through thumbnails of friends' recently uploaded pictures and a notification bar on the home page that simply sides up to show any news.

Shortcut buttons for updating statuses and searching for friends have also been added as well as the ability for videos to be played back reportedly using H.264 encoding.

However, some Android users have reported problems with the new upgrade via Facebook, claiming it drains phones' batteries and duplicates contacts due to syncing issues.

While the update may look neater, experts say it still lacks the sophistication of the iPhone version including Facebook chat and notes functionality.

Android owners who currently use the Facebook app will be notified of the update available for download.
