Lack of creativity

CES 2008 Lionhead boss Peter Moluneux is the second high profile name in as many weeks to air his views publically on the current state of PC gaming.

Last week, Epic Game’s ‘Cliffy B’, described PC gaming as being in ‘disarray’ and said that his company is focusing on the console market.

"For me, the PC is kind of the secondary part of what we're doing," confirmed Bleszinski. "It's important for us, but right now making AAA games on consoles is where we're at," he told MTV Multiplayer.

In an interview with Eurogamer at GDC 08, Molyneux has been equally as harsh on PC Gaming and believes that there isn’t enough creativity anymore.

"I think it's a huge tragedy. I mean, you might as well say PC gaming is World of Warcraft and The Sims... The weird thing is everyone's got a PC, they're just not buying software for it," he said.

"There's an enormous amount of gaming happening with PopCap, Big Fish and Reflective."

"The fascinating thing is when they first started, all these games came out like Peggle and Mystery Files and Alice Greensleeves and Diner Dash, and it felt quite exciting. There was a lot of innovation going on. Okay, there weren't great graphics, but there was innovation.

"In my view, that has completely stopped. They're doing the same game over and over again with a different wrapper. It's like a mini-universe in itself which is emulating what's happening in our industry,"

"The second thing is, you've got The Sims and World of Warcraft sucking all the air out of the PC market. It's just incredible," he concluded.

At the beginning of February, digital distribution channel STEAM announced that they'd hit 15 million accounts and realised year-over-year sales growth of 158% through the holiday thanks to strong sales of Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and The Orange Box.

"PC gaming is thriving, and has evolved into an era of constant connectivity," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.

Surely he means ‘big budget’ PC gaming is WoW and The Sims? Even they are probably dwarved by the market for casual games.
