Windows 10 only launched at the end of July and many who want to update to the Microsoft's latest and greatest OS are still waiting patiently for the phased rollout to come their way. Despite these facts, the OS has already scored more than double the Linux usage stats in the July 2015 Steam Hardware and Software Survey.
Valve's Steam gaming service publishes a Hardware & Software Survey every month. Its last such survey was published just a couple of days ago providing us with stats about the previous month. The survey has previously shown some interesting trends to do with PCs, especially PCs involved in gaming.
Looking at the most recent survey numbers, Windows is by far the dominant platform of choice for Steam users. Over 95 per cent of Steam gamers use a Windows PC. The next biggest platform is Mac OS X which accounts for 3.23 per cent of users and Linux which accounts for at total of 0.89 per cent of users.
Drilling down in the figures we see that Windows 10 64-bit plus other Windows 10 users already account for 2.3 per cent of Steam users – more than double the total Linux user base. Remember the last update we got from Microsoft regarding Windows 10 adoption was that it gained over 14 million users in its first 24 hours. Next month I would expect Windows 10 users to account for multiples of not just Linux users but of Mac users too.
Within the Windows figures Windows 7 is the top OS, preferred by 54.25 per cent of Steam users. The next most popular OS is Windows 8.1 with 32.49 per cent of users.
Other figures which might be of interest to readers include;
- PC video card usage – Nvidia 52.47, AMD 27.34 and Intel 19.69 per cent
- PC processor usage – Intel 75.3 and AMD 24.7 per cent
It will be very interesting to see the August 2015 Steam Hardware and Software Survey, especially if Microsoft doesn't provide any more Windows 10 adoption stats between now and then. Also we are looking forward to the see the impact of the Steam Machines launch later in the year.
