The BBC have an interesting article regarding the work ethics of some of the world's biggest game developers, citing Electronic Arts as previously being one of the main culprits when it comes to 'burning out industry talent'. The article talks about the recent lawsuit filed against EA by a number of ex-employees, including a lady called Erin Hoffman who wrote a blog about EA's demands on her husband. According to the employee's other-half, her game developing husband was asked to work seven days a week which caused a huge strain on their relationship.
Extract from article:
"Part of the problem is that the games industry has grown up like this. The industry is so new and young. "Part of the problem was management. Project planning was not as it should be and not as good as other IT areas," said the developer speaking anonymously to the BBC.
EA have apparently now changed their stance when it comes to their working environment. "People there are very happy now. They are still producing games on time and getting good reviews," said Mrs Hoffman.
A study of the working conditions within a number of development studios is being undertaken by UK Union, Bectu, who are talking to industry insiders to examine the current situation.
Bizarre Creations, Gareth Williams told the BBC that 'the industry was growing up but some unscrupulous firms were still exploiting staff.' Some developers can work up to 50 hours per week with no overtime pay!
It's an interesting read with the underlying issue being the fear factor within these companies. It appears employess are scared that if they do not put extra hours in then they will be replace by people who will.
