Bungie’s first launch title to be developed under its Bungie Aerospace initiative, which aims to help smaller developers launch mobile and social games, will be Crimson Steam Pirates, a real-time strategy and action game from fledgling developer Harebrained Schemes.

Under the initiative, Bungie plans to help hype up its own community in anticipation of the release of Crimson: Steam Pirates, as well as help fund the title and support it moving forward.

Crimson: Steam Pirates is a free iPad game that will be available for download on September 1, 2011. It will follow the adventures of Thomas Blood as he partakes in a series of voyages and will feature classic turn-based gameplay. Harebrained promises us over a dozen types of ships, subs, and airships and 20 crew members with unique special abilities

What is most likely to propel Crimson: Steam Pirates to the top of the app charts though - aside from its affiliation with Bungie - is its multiplayer component, which will feature many game modes, stats, leaderboards and Facebook integration. Ahead of launch, keep an eye out for hands-on previews from the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle this week where players will get their first glimpse at the brand new strategy game.
