As expected, EVGA has made NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285 GPU available to Mac Pro users in the form of its GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition.
The card, pictured above and available from the Apple Store, dethrones ATI's Radeon HD 4870 as the most powerful GPU available for Mac Pro systems. The engineered-to-work-with-a-Mac card features a GPU clocked at 648MHz, 1GB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 2,484MHz and 240 stream processors - making it identical to its PC equivalent.
However, despite the hardware going unchanged, EVGA's Mac Edition will be priced at $449.99 - that's $100 more than EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 for the PC. Looking closer, it's also more expensive than EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 2GB FTW - that $439.99 PC card comes pre-overclocked, with double the amount of on-board memory, for $10 less.
And we thought that Apple tax was merely a myth.
