Fancy pitting your wits against the rest of the planet - well the rest of the planet with internet connections - to predict the results in this month's World Cup in Germany? And grabbing a "Grand Prize" (a 30GB iPod, actually) if you come out on top?

Well, suprise, surprise, you can - and for free - thanks to a new site created by FIRM, a company that claims to be the world's leading provider of survey and reporting software for market research and enterprise feedback management (whatever that is).

FIRM says that the rules are very straight forward.

Once you register, you will have to predict all the scores to all the games for the entire World Cup...Yes, all the way to the Final. You can even choose your Golden Boot! [we think that must mean the highest scorer in the tournament - adds Bob C]

Your entire prediction has to be completed BEFORE the start of the first game of the World Cup: Friday 9th June

For each game predicted you are awarded points. Even if you do not have the correct teams playing, don't worry, you can still earn points for predicting the correct outcome of the game; number of goals scored etc.

What you can also do, once you've made your predictions, is challenge your mates to do the same. You do need to register but that only take a minute and doesn't look like it will get your email added to any spam lists. If you fancy having a go, then the links below take you to the necessary places - but you'd best use IE, not Firefox cos otherwise you won't be able to properly read all the pages on the site - notably the rules page (Foul! Ref! Boo!!).

And if you feel like commenting in the HEXUS.community, that's possible too. Oh, and if you'd like to read FIRM's original press release, that's included below the links.

2006 World Cup predictions site launched

Football community site developed to collect and report predictions

May 24, 2006: FIRM (OSE:FIRM), the world's leading provider of software for Enterprise Feedback Management (EFM) and Market Research (MR), today announced the exciting launch of PredictWorldCup.com, a non-profit web site inviting people around the world to submit their predictions for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The new web site, http://www.predictworldcup.com, invites people to predict all of the scores of all of the games for the entire World Cup. To be eligible for the Grand Prize, and bragging rights over other football fans, submissions must be completed prior to the start of the first game on Friday, June 9, 2006. There is no cost to participate and participants can even challenge their friends to compete in the contest. Following the 2006 World Cup, one winner will be awarded the Grand Prize.

Peter Greenham, Technical Account Manager with FIRM and architect of PredictWorldCup.com explained how he developed this site:
"While assisting a client creating their own panel management and community portal on the Confirmit platform, it struck me that the same standard Confirmit functionality could easily be applied to an online World Cup community. The result is a web site where World Cup fans can sign-up and try to predict the World Cup results."

"PredictWorldCup.com is a great showcase of how the Confirmit panel module can be used to recruit and engage people in communities. The submission of predictions with point calculations illustrates the flexibility of the Confirmit survey and reporting platform," said Kjell Øksendal, FIRM's Vice President of Marketing.

In case anyone is uncertain, my initial take was that this could be a data-gathering exercise but I'm pretty confident it isn't - based on the background of the firm and what's said on the sign up page:

Here's what the sign-up page says:

England to lose against Germany in the 1st round after group stages? Please God no, but I've got an inkling it could happen.
