Mr Geesung Choi, President and CEO of Samsung's Digital Media Business, kicked off the company's press conference with a slew of impressive figures, stating that the Korean company was now the world's number one with respect to volume sales of flat panel (LCD and plasma) TVs. The Bordeaux R7-series, for example, has seen sales of over 3 million units in the last nine months alone.

65-Series 46in LCD

Samsung, along with everyone else, is jumping on the Full HD bandwagon and is launching 40in, 46in and 52in LCD TV sets that support 1080p. Not only is resolution going up but so is colour quality, according to Samsung's David Steel, who briefly outlined SuperClear technology; which includes an inbuilt filter that cuts down on reflections and increases contrast levels. The flagship 65-series, with a 46in panel shown above, features both 1080p and SuperClear that pushes contrast levels up to 12,000:1.

[advert]Steel further divulged details of Samsung's local dimming technology for LCD TVs which uses LED backlighting tech. that can be completely turned off for parts of the screen, offering even better black levels and contrast ratios of up to 100,000:1, he said.

Speaking of LCD with respect to fast-moving images, Samsung will be introducing double framerate driving, up to 120Hz, decreasing response times and reducing the associated blur often seen on low-end models. Colour reproduction will see increases, too, with Samsung's Wide Colour Enhancer. We'll be taking a closer look this tech. during our Samsung booth visit later on in the week.

Samsung, Steel said, will also be specifying many of its high-end SKUs with Anynet+, a networking technology that uses HDMI connectivity to provide easy control over the home entertainment system fron a single control. 2007 will also see the introduction of a Samsung plasma equipped with wireless technology (802.11n) that hooks up to other compliant devices (Blu-ray players, PCs, set-top boxes, etc) without messy wires yet still capable of driving HD content.
