Some of the world's biggest consumer electronics companies have announced collaborations, aimed at furthering the development and uptake of new TV technologies, at IFA 2011.

Korean giant LG has revealed it will be joining a smart TV app consortium headed-up by Philips, and also featuring Sharp. The aim of the group is to define common technical requirements for their Smart TVs, based upon open standards such as HTML5, CE-HTML and HbbTV. A beta version of the common SDK will be released in early October.

Rival CE giant Samsung is the current front-runner in the smart TV market, with some good traction and developer support, so this collaboration could be, in part, a response to Samsung's success. This news makes the premise behind the BBC's YouView initiative - which has suffered a number of delays - even more shaky.

"This cooperation is nothing less than a watershed in the brief history of smart TVs," said Havis Kwon, president and CEO of LG Electronics. "By working in partnership with two innovators in TVs, we've taken a major step towards creating an app market every bit as inventive and dynamic as the one that exists for smartphones."

Samsung, meanwhile, is getting busy on the 3D side of things. 3D has been a regular fixture of shows like IFA and CES for as long as we can remember, and despite the million spent on promoting it, 3D has been very slow to catch on.

The Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative was announced a month ago by Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and XPAND to develop and license wireless 3D active glasses technologies - especially the infra-red communication between screens and glases. At IFA it was announced that Philips, Sharp, Toshiba and TCL were joining the party. LG and NVIDIA are conspicuously absent.
