Managing mobile
Internet giant Google announced a new, free tool in London today, that's designed to lower the m-commerce barrier to entry for small businesses and individuals.
Google Sites mobile landing pages is designed to allow anyone to build a mobile landing page in minutes, without and coding experience. It is, in effect, an extension of the Google Sites tool that has been available for a while, but while there's plenty of help on offer to help build a website, Google has tapped a much younger market here.
"Lots of people are buying on a smartphone, but what we're not seeing is lots of people have mobile-enabled websites making it easy for people to buy on their phone," said Ian Carrington - Google mobile ad exec - today, as reported by the Guardian.
"It's the biggest barrier today for m-commerce, and they are losing out to people who do have mobile-optimised websites. Only 17% of the businesses that we work with today have a mobile-optimised website."
While stressing he wasn't taking sides, Carrington also indicated he thinks companies should have a mobile web strategy as well as an app one. He also revealed that 36 percent of the the UK population now owns a smartphone, and that 20 million of us now access the web via mobile, up from 14 million a year ago.
