Do you follow?

Aiming to make it a little easier to follow interesting people and websites, Twitter has introduced the Follow button, its own take on Facebook's Life button. Despite the slight similarities to Facebook's Like button, the Twitter Follow button isn't actually competing all that directly; the two are more of a complement to than at odds with each other.

As one might guess, the Follow button lets Twitter users follow other accounts directly from their website. Clicking the button gives a pop-up of the latest tweets of the associated account, letting users decide whether or not it really is an account they want to follow.

The Follow button is intended more as a tool for content providers, rather than users, as it doesn't really add much functionality. However, Twitter claims that: "For publishers and brands, adding the Follow Button to your website and using Twitter to stay connected with your audience is a powerful combination. People who follow your account are much more likely to retweet and engage with your Tweets, and to repeatedly visit your website."

The likes of AOL, IMDb, and Wordpress.com are already signed up and integrating the Follow button into their sites. It's to be expected that every other website even tangentially aware of social media will follow shortly.
