All of a Twitter
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey intends to make the micro blogging service more useful for users, as he returns to the firm.
The WSJ reported that he told students at Columbia University's Journalism School: "We have a lot of mainstream awareness, but mainstream relevancy is still a challenge."
About to return to Twitter as product chief, Dorsey reportedly said his main aim is to make it easier for people to navigate the service as well as better catering for users that want to get information from Twitter, instead of sharing their own views.
He apparently pointed out the value is Twitter lies in people being able to find out what is happening ‘right now' such as during the protests in Egypt and he reportedly said: "We need to refocus on that value. That's my goal in the next few months."
Dorsey's return means another reshuffle at the top of Twitter. He was replaced in 2008 as CEO by co-founder Evan Williams, who was in turn replaced by Dick Costolo.
Many people are keen to know what Dorsey thinks will happen to developers who build smartphone apps like Tweetdeck, as Twitter has recently built its own or bought-up products for mobiles, prompting many people to wonder what the company plans for the existing ‘ecosystem' around it.
Dorsey apparently towed the company line in saying that it would be best for developers to push past ‘basic' Twitter services and added that "It's up to any good platform company to really guide its developers in the right way, to inspire them to create interesting and useful applications."
However, he reportedly admitted he has ‘no idea' what he wants to see from developers but reportedly said: "The interesting products out on the Internet aren't building significantly new technologies. They're combining technologies."
While Dorsey has made it clear he is back and committed to Twitter, he will also be juggling his responsibilities with his new electronics payment firm, Square, which lets small companies take credit card payments with smartphones.
"I live across street from Square, and Square is two blocks from Twitter. I live and breathe these companies," he said.
