FSP+PSU+UPS=OMG

To the unenlightened, and I include myself in this group, the fact that PSU (power supply unit) specialist FSP has put a battery into one of its new PSUs may not initially cause a raising of the eyebrows.

However, when product and marketing strategy VP Jan Sen (pictured) told us that this is the first ever product of its type, our eyebrows duly obliged and we had to wonder why.

Essentially is it a PSU and UPS (uninterruptable power supply) combined. It also has a surge protector and will manage the shutdown of the PC in case of a power cut.

This last function is only made possible by the battery. It provides enough power to move the PC into hibernate mode even when the mains power is cut. It is expected to be available by early September.

now that is a good idea. probably a good thing for machines that are left unattended i.e. Nas devices. reminds me i need to consider getting a ups sooner rather than later.
