Conclusion

...we have cause for optimism surrounding OCZ Storage Solutions. The Vector 180 proves the company can produce a top-class consumer drive strong in all areas.

Toshiba-owned OCZ Storage Solutions is reinvigorating its premium consumer line-up with the introduction of the Vector 180 drive. Based largely on the outgoing Vector 150 but now with larger capacities, power-loss protection and an enhanced warranty, the new SSD, available in 120GB, 240GB, 480GB and 960GB models, cuts an impressive figure in an array of benchmarks.

Numbers are good in both out-of-the-box and heavily-used states - a hallmark of a decent SSD - with OCZ's performance very close to the standards set by the best drives available. Pricing, too, is competitive, with the reviewed 480GB version fetching £210 at retail.

The Vector 180's performance credentials aren't in much doubt, but questions remain over the OCZ legacy previously tainted by the use of substandard parts and compounded by poor customer service.

Yet with Toshiba's backing and a predictable supply of NAND for the foreseeable future, together with renewed investment in research and development, we have cause for optimism surrounding the new company, OCZ Storage Solutions. The Vector 180 proves the firm can produce a top-class consumer drive strong in all areas.

No thanks, been burned too many times by OCZ SSD drives. Too far gone imho.

I can understand where you are coming from, but they are no longer the same company they were when people were getting ‘burned’.

I recently bought a OCZ arc100 240Gb. I was aware of previous issues however I don't believe its the same company now that Toshiba own them. Been pretty impressed so far and I saved £15 over the equivalent crucial (£65 vs £80).

edit: Also the warranty is fantastic - They will replace the drive before you even send it in. Seriously helps improve confidence.

I wouldn't worry about “the brand”.
I had the original Vector (before they got into bed with Toshy) and they replaced my SSD really quickly without any hassle and I haven't had any issues since. Now they've got decent NAND and financial support from Tosh, it should be a win-win for everyone? On this alone, I would recommend OCZ/Tosh.
I just cannot bring myself to buy anything with OCZ written on it…..

I know Toshiba own them now and I've never owned an OCZ SSD (have owned DDR/DDR2 RAM and a lot of it did die) but the people I know who purchased OCZ drives (against my better judgement!) all regretted it.

I would just end up kicking myself if I bought one and it caused me issues…..and to top it off the figures all look the same as all the other drives available and the prices are roughly equal as well. Very little incentive to go out on a limb.
