Final Thoughts and Rating

Kingston has made a logical move in introducing a cheaper, more affordable HyperX SSD. Building on the promise of the original, the refreshed HyperX 3K offers PC enthusiasts all of the same performance at a lower price point.

Reduced NAND endurance is a price that most home users will be happy to pay, but while the cost savings over the original drive are significant, Kingston's re-positioned 3K drives aren't as aggressive on price as they perhaps need to be. Right now, we see no obvious reason to spend £195 on a 240GB HyperX 3K when drives such as the 240GB SanDisk Extreme and the 256GB Crucial M4 are readily available for almost £50 less.

Bottom line: The 240GB HyperX 3K is a blazing fast SSD that will serve as a monumental upgrade to most systems, but in order to stand out from the crowd Kingston needs to shave a further few pounds off the asking price.

The Good

Enthusiast-grade performance
Available with an excellent upgrade bundle
Cheaper than the original HyperX

The Bad

Pricing needs to be even more aggressive

I got the 120gb one from scan for £65 recently and I'm really happy with it. 3k writes is more then enough for home users. I guess this one needs to be £130-£140 though - maybe some day.
At the time of writing, SanDisk's 240GB Extreme SSD offers similar-if-not-better performance but costs roughly £50 less.
Too much choice … head explodes! :surprised:

Joking aside, I'm actually quite impressed with the performance of the Sandisk - any idea if that has components akin to the original HyperX or is it closer to this new budget version? Obviously if it's got the longevity of the old HyperX but less than the cost of the new one, then that's got to be worth a go. Especially since Amazon are now selling it for less than I just paid for two 128MB Samsung 830's.

240GB (less TRIM space etc) is going to be more than good enough to migrate my current “apps” partition to. Very tempting…

Which “120GB one” was £65? Very good price. You mean the Sandisk Ultra? For me this HyperX is way, way overpriced in today's market. Why bring out a new ‘budget’ model that is way more expensive than similar performing competition. Expect the prices of these to plummet because at this price point I can't see who would buy one.
Actually the 120gb HyperX 3k was £65 for at least half a day :o

grabbed one quick I tell you. And yes, it's FAST.
Great SSD but the price tag is still quite high even on scan who usually sell thing fairly cheap. I got one off Ebay brand new for just over £120. Someone was selling a bunch of them so I just managed to snap one up and I'm very happy with it. Certainly makes a huge difference going from a hard drive to an ssd.
