Final thoughts and rating

Kingston's a latecomer to the second-generation SandForce party, but for fans of the company's enthusiast-grade components, the HyperX SSD has been well worth the wait.

Supplementing the award-winning and mainstream SSDNow V+100, the top-end HyperX SSD unites a speedy SF-2281 controller with premium 25nm Intel NAND flash memory and an up-to-date firmware. The result is an astounding level of performance that's right in line with the needs of enthusiasts and power users.

But as seems to be the case with all SSDs, there are a couple of provisos. While there's no doubting the sheer speed of the HyperX, the performance gain over cheaper alternatives won't be immediately obvious to all users - in everyday scenarios, a fast SSD is a fast SSD. And, if the 240GB model is out of your price range, be aware that the 120GB alternative will, as a result of featuring fewer NAND memory devices, offer marginally lower performance.

Bottom line: the 240GB HyperX SSD is the fastest 2.5in SandForce SSD to pass through our labs. The drive's performance credentials, unique aesthetic design and optional upgrade kit make it an excellent choice for performance aficionados.

The Good

The fastest 2.5in SandForce SSD we've ever tested
Available with an excellent upgrade kit
Looks the business

The Bad

240GB model is a hugely-expensive proposition

Nearly there, no 2.5" drive have managed to get 600MB/s data transfer yet.
