Summary and thoughts

OCZ's Summit MLC-based SSD is based on Samsung technology that powers a number of other high-end drives. Available in capacities ranging from 60GB to 250GB, 'as-new' drive performance is strong for the 120GB model. Pricing, too, is very competitive with drives with the same performance characteristics, with the 120GB capacity coming in at around £240. Indeed, it can considered one of the cheaper performance drives.

The vagaries of SSDs are such that we won't know the real, full story until Windows 7 and a variety of SSDs ships with TRIM support. It's only then that we'll be able to accurately determine just how good a wide selection of drives are in a range of usage states - from brand-new to well-used. Some drives feature the support in Windows Vista now, but applying the fix is cumbersome in many cases.

What we can say is the OCZ Summit 120GB/128GB drive performs well against its peers when evaluated in a factory-fresh state, especially at its lower price-point. What we'll determine in a large round-up is whether it's just as good under Windows 7 RTM, in various states of freshness. Stay tuned for that.

HEXUS Awards

We'd urge the majority of readers to wait a while and let the SSD market take its course, especially with Windows 7 on the horizon. However, if you're an enthusiast who wants super-fast storage and don't mind paying for it, we can see a point in opting for this drive.
