Thoughts and rating
Our advice to any would-be system builders always revolves around spending sensible budget on the PSU. Skimping on this integral part of the system is a sure-fire road down Instability Avenue, especially if you later upgrade components and tax the supply's limits.
Going for the very premium end of the market is XFX. Teaming up with established PSU-maker Seasonic, XFX has launched a trio of ProSeries supplies for the enthusiast. Starting off at 1,000W and thereby intimating just where XFX is positioning them, the fully-modular supplies are rock-solid in all areas.
Thinking of the reviewed 1,250W in particular, which is an 80-PLUS Gold-certified supply, excellent voltage regulation is combined with above-average efficiency and ripple suppression. Though not a loud supply at any time, the hybrid mode is novel, and we have very little to criticise it from a technology standpoint.
Of course, such design excellence doesn't come cheap. Armed with an retail price of £225, limiting its appeal to well-heel enthusiasts that genuinely push components to the limit, put it on your shortlist if a mega-PC build is in order for 2012.
The Good
Excellent voltage regulation
Fully-modular design works well
Rated to perform at 50°C
Pretty quiet, even at full chat
The Bad
Perhaps cables and ports could be colour-coded?
