Conclusion

The ASUS DSL-AC68U is a class-leading router with performance that is equally as impressive as its feature set, though the relevance of the DSL-AC68U for potential users is strongly device dependant. Pertinently, several AC-capable devices are necessary to fully exploit the 5GHz performance on offer. The TurboQAM feature is an attempt to make N-class devices perform faster but, crucially, this requires the receiving device to make use of a compatible Broadcom N chipset.

The star of the show, in our mind at least, is the excellent web interface backed up with an extensive array of features. From a personal VPN to a download server, or extensive traffic prioritisation and parental controls, the DSL-AC68U ticks a lot of the right boxes. A snappy USB 3.0 performance makes for a reasonable alternative to a costly NAS device; just plug in a USB-based storage drive and within minutes a fully-functional NAS emerges.

The main selling point for users on modem-based connections is the ability to combine the router and modem into a single package, reducing the overall size footprint and the number of plugs and cables required. The integrated DSL modem commands an additional £20 over the RT-AC68U, but this is a small price to pay for users whose connection requires a modem.

Surprisingly, modems aren't as ancient as you may think; most BT-line fibre Internet services still require them. The DSL-AC68U is a nice way to avert the hassle of a separate modem while still fulfilling the role of a truly high-performance router.
