Conclusion

...Asus's out-the-box settings are well balanced for most users' gaming needs.

The Asus TUF VG27AQL1A is another interesting addition to the firm's growing line-up of feature-packed gaming monitors.

Priced at £520, the 27in IPS screen combines a 2,560x1,440 QHD resolution with up to a 170Hz refresh rate. Those attractive core ingredients are bolstered by FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility, ELMB Sync backlight strobing, vibrant colours with excellent out-the-box accuracy, and both the colour coverage and brightness needed to achieve HDR400 certification.

All this is presented in a streamlined chassis with slimmer bezels, a V-shaped stand and well-thought-out controls, yet as with all gaming monitors, there are limitations to be aware of. Asus's efforts to smooth the image and minimise blur work best at high framerates, using ELMB introduces trade-offs such as reduced brightness and less customisation, and as a result there's a tendency to adjust settings based on game or usage scenario.

There's enough here to entertain enthusiasts who want to tweak every setting and toy with a bevy of gaming enhancements, and those who prefer a solution that just works will appreciate the fact that Asus's out-the-box settings are well balanced for most users' gaming needs.

Bottom line: yet to experience silky-smooth gaming on a high-refresh monitor with adaptive framerate synchronisation? The Asus TUF VG27AQL1A has the makings of a tantalising upgrade.

We could all have better monitors RIGHT NOW, if it wasn't for greed and the slow creep of better tech.
Ye-haw another QHD monitor at 27", that really plugs a gap in the market while we wait for the £3k FALD screens or OLEDs too large for desktop use.

Well I like 27" WQHD monitors, so bring on the competition I say.

This one is a bit beyond my price range (the one I am using was already on the high end) but it all helps.
Acer XV272U on Scan for £360 looks like the same spec, including being G-sync compatible and DisplayHDR400.

Doesn't have the 170hz headline figure though, ‘only’ 144hz.
