Final thoughts

The purpose of this article was to examine whether Rockdirect's top-of-the-line Xtreme Ti laptop, now outfitted with an ATI Mobility RADEON X800 XT GPU as standard, reclaimed the ultimate performance crown back from Dell's Inspiron XPS Gen 2.

General performance is pretty good, with a Pentium 4 570 replacing the 560 in our original review model from a few weeks' back. Storage performance, too, is excellent, with 2x60GB 7,200RPM hard drives making day-to-day usage as fast as a well-configured desktop's. However, the biggest impact of this revised model is in 3D tests. The original Mobility RADEON X800 was no slouch in graphics terms, but the introduction of NVIDIA's GeForce 6800 Go Ultra, as specced in Dell's Inspiron XPS Gen 2, eclipsed its performance in almost every way.

ATI, and by inference Rockdirect, has hit back with the Mobility RADEON X800 XT 256MB GPU, boasting hither-to unseen levels of notebook performance. Put quite simply and without adding hyperbole on top, it's the fastest mobile 3D solution to date, and it's almost as fast as a desktop ATI RADEON X850 XT 256MB. That's serious food for thought, isn't it?

Users looking for ultimate notebook performance should seriously consider Rockdirect's XTI series. Taking into account overall performance, the XTI 3.8 is the fastest notebook we've tested thus far. Would we splash out Ā£2,200 and order one right away? Probably not, because Dell's Inspiron XPS Gen 2 offers nearly as much performance but has the added benefits of near-silent running, better battery life, a nicer screen, and a lighter overall weight of 4KG compared to the XTI 3.8's 5.7KG. It may or may not be the best overall package you can buy but it is, arguably, the fastest.
