Conclusion

...offers genuine multi-tasking credentials courtesy of an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, DDR4 memory and SSD storage.

The 2018 Spin 5 is very much a case of Acer doing what it does best. Without excelling in any one area, the reviewed 15.6in model ticks plenty of relevant boxes and packs impressive performance into a sleek and well-priced machine.

At a not-too-unreasonable cost of £800, the touchscreen convertible laptop feels well built, looks attractive and offers genuine multi-tasking credentials courtesy of an 8th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, DDR4 memory and SSD storage.

The core ingredients are bolstered by a decent keyboard and trackpad, as well as a bundled stylus, however there are a few niggling issues to be aware of. Acer's 1080p display offers limited brightness and below-average colour accuracy, fan noise can be distracting, and the usefulness of a 360º hinge on a 15.6in system weighing over 2kg is questionable.

Bottom line: Spin 5 is a competent all-rounder, but if you're drawn to the convertible form factor, the 13.3in model is likely to be the better bet.

The Good

The Bad
8th Gen Intel Core processor
Decent keyboard and trackpad
Stylus included in the bundle
Stereo speakers pack a punch
Good selection of I/O ports

Clumsy as a convertible
Lots of unwanted bloatware
Fan noise can be bothersome
Display could be better

Then watch this space. We have a Ryzen-equipped model in the labs right now.
Use it as a laptop, Acer build quality can vary from extremely bad to average and I wouldn't trust the hinges to last too long.
