Final thoughts

We've previously established that the GeForce 9600 GT is a better SKU than the one it replaced, the GeForce 8600 GT/GTS.

But the problem facing recommending the Inno3D GeForce 9600 GT OC 512MiB is two-fold in nature.

Priced at around £110 for the retail package, it's around £20 dearer than the company's own stock-clocked Armour model and, just as crucially, £10 more expensive than a Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MiB. Complicating matters further, the faster GeForce 8800 GT 512MiB is also available from a starting point of around £110.

Breaking that all down into sage buying advice, the Inno3D GeForce 9600 GT OC, whilst good, suffers from stunningly good competition.

Splashing around £100 on a graphics card in May 2008? We'd recommend buying either a sub-£100 Radeon HD 3870 - it has matching performance and a better feature-set - or a stock-clocked GeForce 8800 GT 512MiB, which is an intrinsically faster SKU, albeit at the minor cost of fewer display outputs and a double-height cooler.

Bottom line: a decent enough GeForce 9600 GT that's compromised by what else is out there, not least from Inno3D's own stable.

Is it me or the 8800 performs abnormally bad it seems as if it's even worse than the 8600GTS on some occasions :surprised:The article states a few times its the faster card of the NV contenders but according to the Hexus review its slightly better than the 8600!
Now that doesn't sound right, does it?!
Either there's something generally wrong with the review or I'm simply too tired (swimming is hard).
Anyway, there doesn't seem to be any excuse not to be excited by NV's (complicated) good performing mid-range although the entire 9-series is a complete joke.At least the 9600 follows in the footsteps of its predecessors (excluding the 8600):the 6600 and 7600 as being the best middle class card.
