Final thoughts

There is ample to like and dislike about Inno3D's iChiLL GeForce 8800 GT Accelero X1 card. On the plus side, the cooler's excellent, helping raise core and memory frequencies to significantly above default levels and matching other super-clocked GTs that we've seen pass through the HEXUS.labs before.

Performance, then, is close to a GeForce 8800 GTS 512's and above that of an also-pre-overclocked Sapphire Radeon HD 3870's. Good enough, really, to play the latest fast-paced games at 1,680x1,050 with decent image-quality settings to boot. 1,920x1,200 will be a stretch unless you're comfortable with sub-30fps averages in the very latest titles, though.

So whilst Inno3D has done a good job in giving the 8800 GT reference card a licking, we feel as if it's missed out by not raising shader clocks, too - a la ZOTAC's AMP! Edition. We also appreciate that most stock-clocked 'GTs, priced some £30-£40 lower, will match the iChiLL's core clocking easily enough: the G92 GPU is highly responsive to frequency increases.

The bundle is also lacklustre for what is a premium product and this specific package, iChiLL, is hard to find for sale in the U.K.

So, yes, the GeForce 8800 GT 512 is a good SKU and the Inno3D iChiLL GeForce 8800 GT Accelero X1 improves on that. However, when batting at around the £190 level, which this card is, we'd look towards the cheapest GeForce 8800 GTS 512 (£199), which is an intrinsically better GPU.

Bottom line: a decent effort at creating the ultimate GeForce 8800 GTS 512, but its pricing proxmity to the better GTS variant is such that it cannot be recommended outright, no matter how good the cooler.

HEXUS.certification

The card passed all of our tests at its advertised specifications but doesn't quite do enough to garner a recommendation to buy for the reasons noted above.

I think this card kind of goes against this one. What is the noise like on the Accelero X1? From a cooling perspective, it ranks amongst the better options. Price/performance is pretty decent assuming 167.77. Does that change Hexus's conclusion somewhat? . By the way, I think you meant to say ‘Ultimate 8800 GT’ (without the ‘S’).
