Conclusion

The upshot is that one can say GeForce GTX 1060 9Gbps and Radeon RX 580 offer performance parity across a range of games.

Having new GPUs enter the market periodically keeps things interesting all round. The latest entrant in the premium mainstream space is the GeForce GTX 1060 9Gbps card, released to counter the threat posed by the Radeon RX 580 GPU.

Adding extra memory bandwidth and keeping the core clock lofty, as Asus has done, results in the new model offering a little extra performance, to the tune of about five per cent in a best-case scenario.

The upshot is that one can say GeForce GTX 1060 9Gbps and Radeon RX 580 offer performance parity across a range of games, and both have enough horsepower to make a good fist of FHD and reasonable QHD rendering when set to the most stringent of quality settings.

Factoring in the much better energy efficiency and smaller form factor of the GeForce cards would normally result in a green-team win. However, in this instance, with the review Asus card costing £325, or £100 more than an EVGA card that it only beats by a few per cent, a lack of value inhibits recommendation. Heck, the much faster GTX 1070 isn't that much more.

The RX580 does seem quicker across the board even if not by much. Even the RX480 seems slightly quicker overall, which is more significant considering the GTX1060 tended to be slightly quicker overall at launch.
£325 lol, pointless testing at this price should have just posted to just buy a 1070.
At £225 this would have been a competitive card - a couple less fps than a 580, for a bit less power and a bit less money than the 8GB. At £325 it's a joke. Other manufacturers are selling the 9Gbps version for less crazy prices (MSI for £275), but it's still a terrible choice
What kind of complete and utter tool would pay £325 for 1060…

… a couple less fps than a 580, for a bit less power …

I know the 580 on test was the stupid-clocked Sapphire Nitro+, but almost 100W is not a bit less power. It's almost 40% less for the whole system. And what's really key about that is not necessarily the power bill, but the heat build up. A system with an RX 580 in it is going to get a lot hotter than one with a 1060 in it. I've recently had to re-case a build because of heat build up; it's something anyone who likes compact computers needs to consider…
