SSDs on a diet
OCZ Technology has launched 1.8in solid-state drives (SSDs) to offer a storage upgrade for ultra-thin notebooks, netbooks and tablet PCs.The OCZ 1.8in Vertex 2 delivers the same performance as the 2.5in edition and is driven by the popular SandForce controller. Offering 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS and features transfer rates up to 285MB/s read and 275MB/s write, the slimmer Vertex 2 is in 60GB, 120GB and 240GB capacities.

Meanwhile, the mainstream OCZ 1.8in Onyx SSD is to be priced at lower levels and available in 32GB and 64GB capacities. The Onyx uses an Indilinx controller to deliver reading speeds up to 145MB/s, is backed by 64MB of cache, and uses only one watt of power consumption even during intensive computing.

“Solid State Drives provide numerous benefits to mobile users including improved performance and reliability as well as lower power consumption versus traditional hard drives,” said Alex Mei, chief marketing officer of OCZ.
"The two 1.8in drives are designed for consumers looking for a compact SSD that is aggressively priced and ideal for netbooks", he adds.
No word on pricing, however.
