Just weeks after the introduction of its range-topping DiskStation DS1010+ NAS server, Taiwanese storage specialist Synology has unearthed a more-affordable alternative in the form of its trimmed-down DiskStation DS710+.

The company's latest NAS server, pictured above, features just two SATA drive bays as standard and a current maximum storage capacity of 4TB. However, like the DS1010+ before it, the DS710+'s storage capacity will be expandable - to up to 14TB with the addition of an optional five-bay DX510, launching in March 2010.

Measuring 157mm x 103.5mm x 232mm and weighing 1.69kg, the DS710+ is fairly compact in size and comes powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom D410 processor and 1GB of memory.

Aiming for the SMB and home-enthusiast crowd, Synology states that the DS710+ can be set and configured within minutes, whilst the DiskStation Manager firmware continues to offer advances business applications. iSCSI target support features as standard, as does wake on LAN/WAN functionality and Windows ADS integration.

Supported RAID modes include JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5 and 6, and Synology reckons the unit will deliver read and write speeds of 110MB/s and 100MB/s, respectively, whilst consuming just 31 watts of power.

The DS710+ is available now priced at around Ā£395. For the complete specification, head on over to the official product page at Synology.com.
