Synology has officially launched its Disk Station DS409slim, a four-bay NAS for the home or office user.

The DS409slim, first seen by HEXUS back at last month's COMPUTEX, sports four 2.5in drive bays and aims to occupy less space than competing solutions by measuring only 120mm x 105mm x 142mm.

Inside, there's a 1.2GHz processor coupled with 128MB of DDR2 memory. Combined with 2.5in drives, Synology reckons its a solution that will lower power consumption whilst offering virtually silent operation. We're told the DS409slim consumes 19 watts with four drives installed, and the single built-in fan only kicks in when temperatures exceed a certain point.

Highlighting its usefulness for the home user, Synology adds that the DS409slim functions as a 24/7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule or NZB download center, and the unit's UPnP support allows for media to be streamed to a range of devices including Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Furthermore, following today's introduction of the DS409slim, Synology has also announced that a beta of its Disk Station Manager 2.2 software will launch later this month, followed by a final release in September. Disk Station Manager 2.2 features a DLNA-compliant Media Server and built-in support for Apple's iPhone.

The DS409slim is now shipping and is available to pre-order from SCAN.co.uk* at a cost of Ā£310.49.

*As always, UK-based HEXUS.community discussion forum members will benefit from the SCAN2HEXUS Free Shipping initiative, which will save you a further few pounds plus also top-notch, priority customer service and technical support backed up by the SCANcare@HEXUS forum.

These synology units are excellent, but the 209 is £250 and 2x 750GB (for RAID 1) WD Green is £100… so ~£350. I doubt 2 of these is much noisier than 4 2.5“ drives.

This one + 4x 250GB (750GB RAID 5) is going to cost in excess ~£500+… going to take it a long time to burn through £150 worth of leccy…

I'm sure this comparison gets worse as desired storage capacity goes up… best to stick with a 2 drive unit for 3.5” drives.
