California-based storage-specialist Seagate has revealed its revamped lineup of FreeAgent external hard drives, and it's quite the selection.
The range, part of the company's Fall 2008 lineup, consists of the ultra-portable FreeAgent Go, the desktop-based FreeAgent Desk, and the high-performance FreeAgent Desk XTreme (pictured).
We'll dive straight into the high-end FreeAgent XTreme - a drive that'll offer transfer rates of 3GB/s using its eSATA connection. If you're still without eSATA, however, you'll be happy to hear that there's also FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 connectivity. The FreeAgent XTreme will become available in October, with 500GB, 640GB, 1TB and 1.5TB models priced at $159.99, $179.99, $259.99 and $299.99, respectively.
The FreeAgent Desk - essentially the XTreme without eSATA or FireWire - offers only USB 2.0 connectivity and will be available later this month priced at $129.99 for 500GB, $149.99 for 640GB, $229.99 for 1TB and $279.99 for 1.5TB.
The portable FreeAgent Go - dubbed as Seagate's flagship offering and the slimmest external drive available today - measures only 12.5mm in height, and manages to retain shock and vibration protection, says Seagate.
Helping differentiate from the competition is Seagate's FreeAgent Dock, available as a $29.99 option. The FreeAgent Go drives will ship this month in four colour options and at capacities of 150GB, 320GB and 500GB - priced at $119.99, $149.99 and $239.99, respectively.
There's also a duo of Mac-friendly drives, too. Seagate tells us it's listening to the Mac community and the end result is the FreeAgent Go for Mac and FreeAgent Desk for Mac. The drives, similar to their Windows counterparts, are pre-formatted for use with Mac OS X and offer FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 connectivity.
It's a promising selection of drives, and further details can be found at the official FreeAgent product page.
