Taiwanese NAS specialist Synology has today announced the launch of its four-bay high-performance NAS solution, the Disk Station DS408.
The latest addition to Synology's range is a slimmer-but-taller alternative to the existing five-bay Disk Station DS508, and features the same 800MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM.
The DS408, pictured above, will come pre-loaded with Synology's latest Disk Station Manager 2.0 software, and will provide its usual array of features, including Surveillance Station, Web Station and Network Recycle Bin to name a few.
The NAS device supports up to four 1TB drives, and unlike the bigger DS508, features one Gigabit Ethernet port, and a single 80mm fan.
Synology states that the DS408 provides ultra-high performance, whilst remaining energy friendly. It'll provide read and write speeds of over 55MB/sec and 33MB/sec, respectively, when configured in RAID 5. Under normal operation, it'll consume a reasonable 40W of power with four hard drives installed, and it offers a scheduled power on-and-off function for further energy savings.

Targeting a wide range of users from professional consumers (prosumers) to corporate, the DS408 has the qualification to answer requests from any user demanding green NAS devices along with large capacity, high performance, and practical applications.
Though pricing is yet to be confirmed, you can expect to pay less than the £650 five-bay DS508. The DS408 is now shipping and should arrive in stores soon.
