Love hertz

Rapidly diversifying monitor maker ViewSonic has returned to its roots with the launch of a new range of LCD monitors with a difference.

The FuHzion range presumably derives its name from the abbreviation for hertz - the unit of frequency. These monitors operate at a frequency of 120Hz, which is the frequency required to be compatible with NVIDIA's 3D Vision technology.

3D Vision promises to deliver a 3D experience in compatible games but, as distributor VIP warned us back in May, a lack of compatible monitors meant there were few kits on the market as there's no point in selling the specs by themselves.

"ViewSonic's heritage in providing high-quality visual display solutions and commitment to emerging technologies was an obvious choice to showcase the NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision stereoscopic glasses solution," said Ujesh Desai, vice president of GPU business at NVIDIA. "Jointly, we are helping to further the growth of truly 3D home entertainment."

So far, only Samsung has had a compatible product on the market - the SyncMaster 2233RZ. To be fair to Viewsonic, it has had a 120Hz product available for a while, but it only received European CE certification recently.

The VX2268wm is a 22-inch with a 2ms response time, 1680x1050 resolution and HDCP support. It has a recommended selling price of £269.

UPDATE - 15:20, 2 September 2009: It looks like you can already buy the VX2268wm.

when are they going to do monitors in 24“ or higher at 120Hz a 30” would be nice
I think they will be testing the waters for a while. No point making something too expensive for a lot of people already even less accessible. Not only that, I don't think it's feasible to guarantee 120Mhz in a modern game at 1900x1200 or 2560x1600 even with the most powerful SLI setup.

The games don't need 120 FPS. It can work at 1 FPS with the same 3d effect however games will effectively have their frame rate halved. (1 frame for each eye)

What concerns me here is the flicker. CRT's flicker at 60 Hz because they are going black to colour 60 times per second. LCD's don't because they just remain the same colour until they have to change. With these glasses, you are going black to colour in each eye 60 times per secons so there will be a noticable flicker on everything. Think of the headaches!
“The long-awaited” - really?

I don't want 3D vision nor do I need it. I'm perfectly happy computing and gaming in 2D.
badass

But the games still need to be smooth. A jerky gameplay will add to the headache.
But I welcome the idea. While I may be happy with gaming as they are, I would like to try it before writing it off. It's been many years since the Virtual Boy.
