While skinny TVs are all the rage, the thickness of a monitor has never seemed that important to manufacturers. Bucking the trend, HP has launched a new screen for the space starved desk that measures in at under 1in (2.5cm) thick.
The 2310e is a 23in LED-backlit monitor that features a 16:9 1,920x1,080px resolution. The company is claiming a brightness of 250cd/m2, a 5ms response-time, and contrast ratios of 1000:1, or 8,000,000:1 dynamic.
The display appears to be a TN-panel - as opposed to the IPS variety - but still manages to produce very good viewing angles of 170° horizontal and 160° vertical. The manufacturer is also claiming that the screen is capable of reproducing 70 per cent of the colour gamut, which is impressive for this type of monitor.
Thanks to the LED backlighting, you'll also get relatively modest power-requirements, drawing only 28W when on and 2W while idle. In addition, HP is boasting all sorts of environmental credentials including mercury-free lamps, arsenic-free glass, BFR and PVC-free components, a recycled plastic back-panel and Energy Star 5.0 compliance.
Wisely, the company has chosen to equip the monitor with DisplayPort, HDMI and an HDCP-compliant DVI port for plenty of connectivity options. The 2310ei is also available, though this unfortunately drops the HDMI port.
Currently only the 2310ei is available in the UK, costing £219 including VAT. However, the HDMI-equipped 2310e is expected in the US on September 29 for $289 (£225 including VAT), so we'd expect availability here to follow shortly afterwards.
