It seems that HP isn't the only company to launch a Wireless PC-to-TV kit this week. ASUS is now joining the party through a collaboration with AMIMON on the WiCast EW2000.
The kit - which was shown-off at CES - looks remarkably similar to HP's offering, featuring two boxes that are capable of beaming a 1080p 60Hz video-stream with under a millisecond of lag. This includes DRM-protected content such as Blu-ray movies.
The boxes will connect via HDMI to both the PC and the HDTV, while the transmitter-box draws power from the computer's USB port. Not only is this being touted as a solution for notebooks and netbooks, but ASUS is suggesting it for connecting desktops and games consoles to a TV - though the latter seems slightly less useful.
Obviously no unusual set up or software installation is required.
The underlying technology is based on AMIMON's Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI), which has the backing of several other major consumer-electronics manufacturers - including Samsung, Sony and LG. The system operates in the 5GHz band, but no other details were revealed.
We're not sure if this is the same tech that drives HP's product, but the stats are curiously similar. Since neither company is listed as an adopter on the WHDI website, there really is no way to tell at this point.
The WiCast EW2000 will be available sometime this month, with an expected price-tag of $199 (£155 including VAT).
