MSI throws its hat into core-unlocking ring

We shared some exciting news from ASUS last week, detailing the company's 'Core Unlocker' feature which will be vying to find its way into the hearts of overclockers everywhere, with the allure of a six cores, for the price of four promotion!

The excitement surrounding what is believed to be conservative pricing, hexa-core performance and some core-unlocking magic, is making AMD's upcoming 'Thuban' family an interesting prospect and today, we find MSI throwing its own hat into the core-unlocking ring.

The company's 890GXM-G65 motherboard, unsurprisingly powered by AMD's 890GX chipset, is kitted out with several recent innovations - USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s support for example - and, provides DirectX 10.1 graphics capabilities courtesy of the integrated ATI Radeon HD 4290 part.



Wanting its share of the pie though, MSI gushes about the prowess of its BIOS engineers by announcing the implementation of technology, to allow for some serious CPU core unlocking action! By the company's own accounts, successful users can expect some significant performance boosts, not to mention savings and we expect that the door is now wide open for some more competitors to display their own wares.

MSI has gone further, by stressing that its top-to-bottom range of AMD800 series motherboards will deliver its 'Unlock CPU' initiative, with AMD Phenom II X6 CPU support, courtesy of a BIOS update.

It seems like some interesting overclocking adventures could be just around the corner!
