ASUS launches range of sexy, portable laptops

Whilst perusing the ASUSTek stand in Hall 2, we stumbled upon ASUS' business-class laptops that are perfectly suited to the road warrior who doesn't want to compromise power for form factor.

The first, in Apple-like white, is the W5F. It's been recently launched in Europe and features Intel's Napa (Centrino) platform as a base. Tipping the scales at 1.65kg and sporting a bright, clear 12.1in WXGA display and multiformat DVD ReWriter as standard, it can be configured to house an Intel Core Duo T2600 CPU, 1.5GByte RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, EDR Bluetooth, and 120GB hard drive. It also features an inbuilt 1.3MP webcam, Intel GMA 900 graphics and ASUS' Splendid technology which, the company claims, gives a clearer, sharper picture. Pricing for a low-end model starts at around the Ā£1,000 mark.

The pick of the mobile bunch has to be the U5F. It features the same dual-core technology as the W5F but packs in the fun in a smaller form factor. Weighing just 1.4kg, complete with optical drive and XGA (non-widescreen) TFT, it's perfect for the hack that needs to report from hot, humid trade shows (hint, hint, editor).

What makes both of these laptops even more attractive is Intel's declaration that Merom, the mobile successor to Yonah, will be, for the most part, a drop-in upgrade.

The U5F is going into mass production right now and will be available to buy in a month or two.
