ASUS has been showing its love for bamboo at trade shows the world over for as long as we can remember. Having presented some gorgeous concept designs at CeBIT earlier this year, ASUS has now officially announced that the its bamboo-clad products are no longer a concept, and have entered mass production.

The first products, a pair of Bamboo Series notebooks, signal ASUS' intentions of being recognised as an environmentally friendly manufacturer. The Bamboo Series notebooks are said to be "truly green throughout...from its conception, production and use, to its eventual recycling and disposal."

The use of recyclable and renewable materials isn't all that makes the Bamboo Series more eco-friendly, either. Using Intel's Centrino 2 technology and its own proprietary Super Hybrid Engine, ASUS claims that the Bamboo Series' battery life is extended by as much as 35 per cent to 70 per cent.

For the not-so-green-conscious user, these notebooks aren't all about the environment. The bamboo design provides a touch of flair that you'll rarely see elsewhere, and the notebook specification isn't anything to laugh at. You'll find a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of RAM, LED-backlit displays and solid-state storage options.

It's a stand-out piece of kit, and will be available in 12.1in and 11.1in models. However, despite having entered mass production, ASUS hasn't yet stated when we'll see them in store, or at what cost. Still, if you're interested, take a look at the official press release below for plenty more green-gloating and a detailed specification.

Thats a really good looking laptop but it would be even better looking and more practical if they were to round of the corners.
Great! I loke the idea of using bamboo for things like this. Looks great and is sustainable.
I would love one of them, but it all depends how much they cost :P I'm guessing a fair bit tbh. A great looking idea though.
Surely, the bamboo is a bit of a gimmick, since it'll probably just be a veneer on top of plastic.

And Adam… see you tomorrow. You have to guess who I am. :D
I'm slightly sceptical about the ecological credentials of the bamboo, if they've flown it half way around the world to use it it's probably worse than the plastic - could be another Toyota Prius.

Having said that, you can't argue about the style, it looks fantastic.:)
