AMD MAKES MAJOR ANNUAL MARKET SHARE STRIDES IN
COMMERCIAL AND CONSUMER PC MARKETS WORLDWIDE
- AMD's focused commitment to commercial sector pays off with 40 percent share
of U.S. small business PC market -
SUNNYVALE, CA-DECEMBER 12, 2001- AMD today announced it has posted impressive
year over year market share gains based on shipments for both the commercial and
consumer markets worldwide, according to the Gartner Dataquest quarterly report
for the third quarter of 2001.*
Most significantly, AMD gained ground in the U.S. commercial sector,
securing 40 percent of the small business PC market in the third quarter.
Additionally, AMD processors accounted for more than half of all processors
shipped to the Japanese home desktop PC market, as AMD captured 54 percent
share, up from 24 percent one year ago. And in Western Europe, AMD grabbed 49
percent market share of processor shipments targeted for the home desktop PC
market, an increase from 25 percent one year ago. All figures reflect Windows®-based
desktop market segments.
"AMD has taken significant strides in improving its market share position
from one year ago, most notably on the U.S. small business front, and in the
home markets in Japan and Western Europe," said Ed Ellett, vice president
of Marketing for AMD. "More recently, in sequential quarter to quarter
figures, AMD managed to defend its market share position, despite a stagnant PC
market and in the face of intense competition.
"AMD's strategy is paying off. We are maintaining our traditionally strong
presence in the consumer market, while simultaneously gaining acceptance as a
serious commercial player," Ellett continued. "Today's introduction of
our AMD Athlon(tm) MP processor 1900+ and the AMD-760(tm) MPX chipset poises us
for even better penetration of the commercial space."
In the overall U.S. market, according to Gartner Dataquest, AMD experienced
considerable PC processor market share growth, from 17 percent in the third
quarter 2000 to 27 percent in the third quarter 2001. AMD increased its share in
all Windows®-based desktop market segments, including the small, mid-size and
large business, government, education and home markets.
In the U.S. government sector, AMD had 33 percent share. AMD also doubled its
presence in the U.S. education market, capturing 18 percent market share, up
from 9 percent one year ago. AMD continues to vigorously pursue opportunities to
bring reliable and stable platforms to business, government, and education end
users.
AMD has also been honored for its commitment to and innovation for the mid-size
business market, capturing three consecutive wins for Best of Show at the
Gartner Midsize Enterprise Summit event. AMD's product portfolio provides the
reliability, stability, compatibility, manageability and performance required by
IT managers and enterprise users.
