Press release

British firm VeryPC intros 9W multi-core PC – the world's greenest desktop PC

06/03/2008 - On the back of winning the title of 'Environmental Innovator 2007' last December, British eco computer firm VeryPC is introducing GreenHive – its greenest product to date.

GreenHive is aimed at all sizes of organisations, from SMEs to PLCs, and reduces the electricity per user to a mere 9W (excluding screens and peripherals).

That contrasts with the power usage of a normal PC – not typically less than 100W and often a great deal more.

Despite this, each GreenHive user can still draw on the processing power of an energy-efficient, multi-core 2.3GHz AMD CPU.

As an example of the possible cash savings, a call centre with 560 PCs could reduce its electricity bill by around £85,000 a year, simply by switching to GreenHive from traditional desktop PCs.

GreenHive uses special GreenPCs, each acting as a hub for distributed processing, storage and connectivity for up to seven users within 10m.

VeryPC's own research shows that a typical multi-core office PC only uses on average around five per cent of its processing resources. Our energy-saving alternative is to share the processing power of one PC among multiple users, who still enjoy similar computer performance to users that work on dedicated PCs.

However, GreenHive is NOT a thin client. Significantly, that means it doesn't need special terminal servers – it will plug straight into an existing network without modification.

Footprint of a light bulb

Each GreenHive unit has a similar operational footprint to a light bulb. And, like a light bulb, it can be turned off when not in use.

In contrast, it was recently announced in the Global Action Plan - Inefficient Truth report, Dec 2007 that a medium-sized server in a data centre has a similar carbon footprint to a gas-guzzling 4x4 with fuel consumption of 15mpg!

VeryPC MD Peter Hopton says, "GreenHive can save an organisation over 90 per cent of the electricity consumed by its computer towers. That equates to a lot of money in a business environment.

"And, as well as being operationally more efficient, GreenHive provides huge reductions in manufacturing energy, logistical energy and waste electronics."

Businesses can pick up a GreenHive box for seven users from just £1,500. Alternatively, for just £3,300, they can get an all-in GreenHive package consisting of 19in flat screen monitors and a colour laser printer-copier-scanner - all backed by a three-year next-day swap out warranty and a three-year subscription to the Carbonite online backup system.

Josie Gregory who runs Airedale Business Services, has told us he's convinced by GreenHive, saying that, "It dramatically reduces carbon-footprints - in a large corporate organisation the savings are huge!".
