The 4-way server running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 is available for remote access to SourceForge.net's burgeoning membership of software developers. Users can test, debug and port applications for the AMD64 platform that includes servers and workstations based on AMD Opteron and desktops and notebooks based on the upcoming AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processors, the first and only 64-bit processors based on the industry-standard x86 architecture.
AMD's unique ability to utilize the x86-based technology helps to simplify the porting of 32-bit applications to AMD64. IBM software developers recently ported millions of lines of code associated with the 32-bit version of the DB2 Universal Database software to the 64-bit product in just two days.
"With its new AMD Opteron processor-based server, SourceForge.net can provide the essential tools to thousands of developers eager to port existing applications and create new software for AMD64," said Ben Williams, director of the Server/Workstation Business Segment at AMD. "This arrangement should help to expedite the delivery of software for the AMD Opteron processor."

About the AMD Opteron(tm) Processor
The AMD Opteron(tm) processor is based on AMD's eighth-generation processor core, which marks the introduction of AMD64, the industry's first 64-bit, x86 technology implementation. This technology preserves companies' investments in 32-bit applications, while allowing a seamless transition to 64-bit computing as those companies require. The AMD Opteron processor is designed to deliver high-performance server and workstation solutions for today's most demanding enterprise applications. The processor is scalable, reliable and compatible, which can result in lower total cost of ownership. Key AMD Opteron processor innovations include an integrated memory controller, which reduces memory bottlenecks, and HyperTransport(tm) technology, which increases overall performance by removing or reducing I/O bottlenecks, increasing bandwidth and reducing latency.
