AMD CEO HECTOR RUIZ AND PRESIDENT VICENTE FOX OF MEXICO CONVENE "U.S.-MEXICO COLLABORATIVE" CONFERENCE TO ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT IN MEXICO





SUNNYVALE, CA - Sept. 29, 2003 - In his opening remarks at the first-ever "U.S.-Mexico Collaborative: Partnering for Technological Advancement" conference last week in New York, AMD (NYSE: AMD) CEO Hector Ruiz discussed the need for collaboration and the importance of Information Technology (IT) in helping boost development and economic prosperity in Mexico. The meeting of U.S. Hispanic business leaders, U.S. and Mexican government officials, and Mexican business leaders was jointly organized by AMD, the Mexico Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) and the U.S.-Mexico Foundation for Science (FUMEC).



"The 'U.S.-Mexico Collaborative' conference will help generate the roadmap for the future of technology and technology-based education in Mexico," said President Fox of Mexico in his remarks opening the conference. "The center of economic growth for Mexico, and our interest as a government, is focused on Information Technology. Our goal is to have a minimum of 1% of Mexico's Gross National Product (GNP) invested back into IT."



"IT is the engine of growth for the global economy. We all stand to benefit from cross-border business collaborations that ensure Mexico's population has access to the educational resources and basic technology tools required to compete in a global economy," said Ruiz. "It is encouraging to see President Fox place such importance on technology development.





"In a short period of time, President Fox's administration has connected the country's municipalities and communities, brought more computers into the public education system, and aided the development of technology and software that is 'Made in Mexico.' The success of these efforts, and our collective economic and technological future, depends on mutually-beneficial global partnerships and truly open and competitive markets."



Keynote speeches and moderated discussions covered investment promotion and the current economic outlook for Mexico, the latest developments in Mexico's science and technology initiatives and industries, opportunities for enhancing Mexico's education system, and areas for collaboration between the U.S. and Mexico.



"Mexico's goal is to develop a knowledge-based economy," said Jaime Parada, director general of CONACYT. "This conference, the first of its kind, has been an excellent launching point to establish public and private sector research and development in Mexico, develop supplier networks linked to high added-value businesses, and grow joint ventures between businesses in the U.S. and Mexico."
