The need for speed

Samsung has reportedly expressed intentions to release the world's first 2 GHz dual-core processor mobile phone within the next 12 months.

A senior official at the company told Korean news outlet Daum that the company will release a 2 GHz dual-core CPU by next year. It's expected to have the processing capabilities of a regular PC and should be available under the Exynos Cortex A9 processor brand, which the company launched in February, and was the successor to its Hummingbird Cortex A8 chip.

Hoping to see handsets packing as much processing power as a laptop, Samsung's 2 GHz dual-core processor is said in the story to give the phone the processing power of a single 4 GHz CPU. Whether it's as simple as that in reality is debatable.

Coming in just a year after LG came up with the world's first dual-core handset - the LG Optimus 2X, the upcoming Samsung smartphone would be the latest to join the new breed of dual-core mobile devices. However, there were no other details were released about the 2012 phone.

According to T3, Samsung also recently announced that it is planning to increase the processing power of the Samsung Galaxy S II to 1.2GHz. The handset was initially unveiled at the Mobile World Conference with a 1GHz Exynos dual-core processor.
