The updated Nexus 7 tablet has recently been spotted in FCC approval documents, Bluetooth certification documents and on server logs. The new Google tablet, with the popular 7-inch screen size, sports a 1080p display and will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The tablet will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC complemented by 2GB of RAM. Separately, manufacturing sources suggest a July launch “wouldn’t be surprising”. The 16GB Wi-Fi version is expected to be priced around $229.
The new Google Nexus 7 has been spotted in official regulatory documentation under the ASUS branded K008 and K009 tablets (Wi-Fi and LTE versions respectively). The ASUS K008 was tested earlier in June by the FCC and had a software version of JWR11 which is thought to represent Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
From the leaked FCC documentation and other sources the specs are as follows:
- 1.5Hz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU
- 2GB of RAM
- 1080p HD screen display
- 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera
- 32GB on-board storage
- NFC, Wi-Fi, LTE
- Wireless Qi Charging and 3950mAh battery
The FCC docs don’t mention screen size so the 1080p specification, above, may not be correct. A report at the end of last week using information garnered by market researcher IHS said display maker Japan Display Inc. was making a 1,920 x1,200 pixel display for the next generation Nexus 7.
We previously reported a July launch date of a next generation Nexus 7 with a higher res screen and a Snapdragon processor, instead of an Nvidia part, as manufacturing sources talked to Reuters about production plans in April.
