Wait and see?

O2 has stalled the launch of Sony Ericson's Xperia Play handset, which is widely known as the PlayStation phone.

The handset was due to launch on 1 April across all 5 of the UK's major networks but O2 has declared it will put the release on hold as it has found some software bugs playing havoc with the phone's performance.

In a blog post, O2's head of testing, Stuart Hibberd wrote: "We've been testing the phone non-stop for weeks and have found some bugs in the software that, if they're not fixed, means customers won't have a great experience."

He added: "We've been working with Sony Ericsson to get these bugs ironed out, but haven't been able to get them fixed in time for us to be able to launch the phone on April 1st as we originally planned."

O2 said it will work with Sony Ericsson over ‘the next couple of weeks' to fix the bugs and promised to post updates on its progress regularly.

Of course the Xperia Play is the first Sony PlayStation phone on the market and comes packed with Android Gingerbread, a slide-out gaming pad, touchscreen and 6 full games.

There is currently no news on whether other networks have discovered software bugs on the handset.

One cheeky consumer posting on O2's blog wrote: "Issues with the vanilla version of the software as provided by SE, or problems with your own O2 branded bloatware added afterwards?"

To which O2 answered: "The bugs are with the software on the phone, not anything O2 branded."

Whether there are any delays on other networks or not, consumers desperate to get their hands on a white flavoured Xperia Play will have to hang on until it launches on O2 as that colour is exclusive to the network.

Don't think Sony really have a clue about software development with their phones. This phone is a 100% gimmick - solely looking for sales on the playstation brand.
