Google has added indoor map support for its Google Maps Android app, allowing users to find their way around huge department stores, airports and public spaces

Google Maps 6.0 currently only supports a small number of US and Japanese locations, including the Mall of America, IKEA, The Home Depot and San Francisco International Airport. However, more indoor spaces are expected to be added over the coming months.

Detailed floor plans automatically appear when you’re viewing the map and zoomed in on a building where indoor map data is available. The familiar ‘blue dot’ icon indicates your location within several meters, and when you move up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the interface will automatically update to display which floor your on,” Google says.

The update also features several enhancements, including a drop-down menu allowing you to flick between the likes of Places, Navigation and Latitude. There's also a new list of popular searches based on your current location, just in case you fancy having a snoop around neighbouring locations.

The list of current launch partners extends to select Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s locations, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare Airport. Google says it will continue to add new indoor maps to public buildings across the world and is currently asking interested business owners to get in touch.

Sounds like a good idea (assume it ever makes it the uk in any meaningful way - not holding my breath) but how does the GPS work? I thought it need line of sight to satellites?

There's always the cell tower fallback isn't there (at least for phones)?

Sounds like a nice idea - maybe they could add locations which aren't actually “indoors” - like theme parks for example. That'd also presumably give them a chance to sell some ad space pointing to the souvenir stands etc.

The idea of putting airports in though also appeals, especially if they can get them done in time for 2012's summer holiday season. Wouldn't even necessarily have to have a “you are here”, as even a floor plan would be useful.
Terrorists welcome this new feature

Not nearly accurate enough for in-building locations. I'd be happy if it could detect which building I was in, never mind which floor!

But having building plans available would be quite cool, regardless of GPS.
I seem to remember Nokia working on something like this a few years ago. It used a different type of sensor. Here we go it was bluetooth so we should all be good to go if google uses this method. Looks cool.
