Android catchup

Leading Internet telephony service Skype has finally released an app for Android. Owners of handsets with Android version 2.1 onwards can now make effectively free calls to other Skype-empowered phones, or PCs for that matter.

We downloaded the app on our Motorola Milestone (still on Android 2.1 - sigh) and it all looks pretty straightforward. You just download it, sign in with your existing user account, and it gives you one simple contact syncing option - although we're not convinced how effective that is; at least a couple of our contacts don't seem to have been updated with Skype information.

Just to remind you, as well as free Skype-to-Skype calls you get a bunch of other Internet telephony services at a price. We've included a screenshot of the Skype tariff page below. There are also subscription offers for international calls.

There are a fair few caveats at the end of the blog post announcing Skype for Android. Here they are:

  • Skype is not available in the Android Market in China or Japan.
  • Skype has been tested on HTC and Motorola devices with Android OS 2.1 and above. It may work on other Android phones, but we can't guarantee full functionality or compatibility. We're aware of some problems with the Samsung Galaxy S, and we're looking to address these in the future.
  • It's free to use Skype in a WiFi zone. If you use Skype with a mobile data connection, operator charges may apply, so we recommend an unlimited data plan.
  • In the US, you can make calls only over WiFi.
  • A fair use policy applies to unlimited subscriptions.

hooray we now have this buggy bloated and slow crap on android. there must be more reliable alternative to voip than skype in this day and age
Hmm, didn't work very well on my T-mobile Pulse but I thought it might be pushing it a bit!

:)
2.1 and up, damn you Sony Erricsson! Really tempted to just stick this phone in a drawer for 6 months and see if it's no longer redundant then.
It took them a bit of time to release it?
