But there is a downside to all this goodness and whilst it doesn’t really affect the use of the Warrior, it is a bit of a bummer… and it’s all to do with the key press action.I’m sorry, but as good and as sensibly designed as the Warrior is, the converse is true of the actual build quality behind the keys themselves. Seriously, it feels like you’re using a very cheap keyboard with a layer of foam behind the keys rather than a set of springs. Close your eyes and the older gamers might even believe their hands are back on a Speccy 48 keyboard. Ok, well, it’s not quite as bad as that but after admiring the thought behind the layout and the ease of setting up and actual use, it seems WolfKing have decided to skimp on the actual build quality behind the keys. This might well turn off a few potential buyers and I have to admit that until I attached the Warrior and used it, I was expecting an experience along the lines of playing with PC World’s budget PC Line keyboards, the action really is that spongy.
But after spending a good deal of time with the Warrior in Quake 4 and Battlefield 2142, I have to say that the soggy key action isn’t much of a problem at all. After all, key presses are digital things, not analogue, and it’s not like I’m having to type with the Warrior (which would be a nightmare) so I found myself enjoying it immensely. Of course, for those of you who like a low sensitivity setting on your mouse, you can now have a whole keyboard’s worth of extra space too as the Warrior is now more than 6” across.
So in summing up, the WolfKing Warrior is well worth the dosh if you mainly play FPS games. In fact, any game that needs a lot of intuitive key pressing will benefit from the addition of a Warrior and that includes MMOGs like WoW.
At the time of writing I understand there’s more to come from WolfKing, so let’s hope they read this and sort out the mechanism behind the keys… if they can come up with something akin the action on a Cherry keyboard but make it in the shape of the Warrior, I’d probably marry it… As it is just now, I’d sleep with a Warrior on a regular basis but wouldn’t admit to knowing it in public…
