Infinity Ward's first-person shooter, Modern Warfare 2, now holds the U.K. record for day one sales of a videogame, says industry voice-box ELSPA.

Surpassing Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold 613,000 units on day one and amassed a whopping £27.2 million, Modern Warfare 2 has sold 1.23 million units, which ELSPA says totals £47million.

“These first day sales figures are astonishing and clear evidence that videogames are now mainstream in the UK,” said ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson.

Keep an eye out for out Modern Warfare 2 review, which is due to be published this Friday.

i was really hoping this would do badly because of the lack of dedicated servers, Sadly i think we can kiss that goodbye in future releases as well as they now know it will sell without and dedicated servers are an extra expense for them.

It was never going to do badly. Biggest game of the year most likely and also it was only the PC players who kicked up a stink about it. I have it on the PC and it's not as bad as the doom sayers made out it would be, also the fact half the people that signed the petition to boycott the game ended up buying it anyway so it was a lost cause from the moment the crap kicked off. Although I did laugh when someone showed me a link to Mininova and the leechers of MW2 on the PC were around 52k at that time.

Dan have you played the game yet on the PC or is this another PC gamer rant without actually trying the game? The PC players as usual moaned about something and then went and bought it/played it anyway, those who did sign the boycott then went out and pirated the game. 52k alone from mininova that night I looked so all it has done is give Activision and IW the perfect excuse to not make a PC version of future releases and I would bet its the same with Treyarch and their next installment. So essentially shooting yourself in the foot.

It's amazing the amount of people I see moan about the PC version and they haven't even tried it. Once you get online with it, there are no lag issues from what I have seen, there is list after list of games running and spec op's is proving easy enough to find players. Even the clans seem to be finding ways around the problems, TeamSpeak for voice instead of the in game chat, creating private matches and inviting the other clanners in etc.

Either way the game is good, SP is short yes and boohoo a few companies lose money because they can't sell dedicated servers and the modders don't get to waste a few days making a map or skin etc. There is still CoD4 for that and to be honest, CoD 4 online I think is more intense with the MW2 online being a run and gun affair.

The same happened with L4D2. Masses of boycotts and petitions because Valve were releasing it so soon after L4D1 but shock and horror, look at the steam pre-order chart. Seems L4D2 is one of the biggest sellers at present. It's the same cycle every time, players moan about games on the PC then do the opposite and buy it anyway so no wonder companies are taking a lend of PC players as they know people will have a fit and then buy it regardless.
Any idea how it works on a lan?

Any idea how it works on a lan?

Haven't even thought about LAN play but my day's of lans are long gone. I haven't been to a LAN party in over 5 years. Doesn't help none of my friends even play games on the PC any more so I am sort of forced to play on the 360 a lot more to play games with friends.
i'll see if it can do lan today
